Pokemon games have evolved immensely over the years. We’ve seen them go from simple Pokemon battles factoring one element to introducing over 1,000 Pokemon and many new aspects to factor in. One such factor is the Pokemon Nature Chart, a feature that was introduced to Pokemon games after generation III (Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire).
Today, our goal is to thoroughly explain the Pokemon Nature Chart and how it affects your Pokemon’s activities. So let’s take a look at what this Pokemon Nature Chart is exactly.

What Is the Pokemon Nature Chart?
Pokemon Nature was introduced in generation III of Pokemon games and has continued to be a feature in the following generations. Depending on the Nature of a Pokemon, they will receive a 10% increase as well as a decrease to one of their base stats (Attack, Defence, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, Speed). Natures are chosen at random for each Pokemon and there are 25 different Natures in total.
The Pokemon Nature Chart helps us plot these Natures graphically to give players a better understanding of what Nature they should aim for with a particular Pokemon. You don’t want to get a Nature that reduces attack and increases defence on a Pokemon like Gallade which is built to deal damage. Before we show you the Pokemon Nature Chart, you should also know that 5 Natures increase and decrease the same stat, which nullifies their effect. We’ll mention those separately later on.
Stat +/- | -Attack | -Defence | -Sp. Atk | -Sp. Def | -Speed |
+Attack | Hardy | Lonely | Adamant | Naughty | Brave |
+Defence | Bold | Docile | Impish | Lax | Relaxed |
+Sp. Atk | Modest | Mild | Bashful | Rash | Quiet |
+Sp. Def | Calm | Gentle | Careful | Quirky | Sassy |
+Speed | Timid | Hasty | Jolly | Naive | Serious |
If you look at the Pokemon Nature Chart above, you can clearly understand the stats affected by each Nature. Natures are assigned to Pokemon randomly so it might take you more than once to get your desired Nature on the Pokemon. The 5 Natures we have highlighted in grey are null Natures. A Pokemon that receives any of them will not have its stats affected in any way.
Pokemon Nature & Their Likes/Dislikes
Interestingly enough, a Pokemon’s Nature doesn’t just affect their base stats, it determines what types of berries they’re going to like as well as dislike. There are five berry flavours including Spicy, Sour, Dry, Sweet, and Bitter. A Pokemon’s Nature dictates which berry flavour they will like in accordance with the stat determined by their Nature. On the flip side, whichever stat is decreased by Nature will be the flavour the Pokemon dislikes.
- Attack: Spicy
- Defence: Sour
- Sp. Atk: Sweet
- Sp. Def: Dry
- Speed: Bitter
This is something you’ll need to keep in mind while foraging and collecting berries. It is best to have an ideal Nature you want in mind so you can collect berries of the same type to save time. Knowing which Nature you want beforehand will save you a lot of time in experimentation to get the best stats and will provide you with the strongest version of your Pokemon.

Evolutions Affected By Nature

The effects of a Pokemon’s Nature did not stop at stat changes and its likes and dislikes. We’ve seen with the likes of Toxel that the form of Toxtricity it evolves in is based on Toxel’s Nature. Toxel can either evolve into the Amped form of Toxtricity or the Low Key form. This might also be applicable to other Pokemon who have evolved multiple forms, however, that is not confirmed as of yet.
Picking Your Own Nature
We hope this heading isn’t too misleading for players since we already said Natures are assigned at random by the game and remain the same through evolutions. However, two features within Pokemon games can allow players to select the Nature their Pokemon will receive or change an existing Pokemon’s Nature. Madam Celedon and Mints help with these methods respectively.
Madam Celedon is a feature reserved only for Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! By paying Mama Celedon 10,000 Pokemon dollars in the Pokemon Centre, players can choose the Nature of all Pokemon encountered in the wild (Or received as a gift) until midnight of that day. Madam Celedon presents two flowers, the first for the desired stat increase while the second for the desired decrease. Choose carefully since it’s hard to pay her repeatedly.
Mints on the other hand allow players to alter the stats changes provided by the Nature of an existing Pokemon. Depending on the type of mint you give to your Pokemon, they will acquire a new Nature and the corresponding stat changes. You should keep in mind though that this won’t change their original Nature, it will only affect the stat changes they receive through Nature. The Pokemon’s liked and disliked flavours, Toxel’s evolution, and Nature inherited by breeding that Pokemon will remain unchanged.

The Bottom Line
Nature has started playing a big role for the Pokemon you take into battle. If you want the best results and best possible stats on a given Pokemon, you’ll need to follow the Pokemon Nature Chart in order to get the maximum information. Make sure you plan ahead of time so you don’t waste your time and resources on an inefficient Pokemon.
