Pirates and video games have a long history, with classics and modern gems like The Secret of Monkey Island and Sea of Thieves setting the standard for swashbuckling fun. However, Cat Quest 3 offers a unique twist: a cat-themed pirate adventure that blends humour, action, and exploration into an irresistibly charming package.
Unlike its traditional epic fantasy roots, Cat Quest 3 takes the series in a bold new direction, embracing a high-seas adventure of piracy. For example, as you explore the vibrant Purribean Sea (yes, puns intended), you’ll find yourself immersed in a world that’s as charming as action-packed, offering a refreshing change of pace with seldom a dull moment.

Cat Quest 3 Detailed Review
Story: A Tale of Adventure and Puns

The story of Cat Quest 3 is as delightful and pun-filled as fans of the series would hope. Fortunately, the narrative never overstays its welcome, offering a lighthearted journey through a dangerous world, but the tone remains playful.
Set in the perilous Purribean, this game invites players on a quest for the legendary Northern Star, a powerful artifact sought by all due to its power to grant any desire. As a pirate kitty on a quest for the Northern Star, we found that sailing from one island to the next is quick and seamless, with no loading screens interrupting our adventure. It’s a streamlined and lean experience that we did not imagine.
Furthermore, every island is visible on the overworld map even at the start, with each offering a compact but well-designed area filled with treasures, enemies, and secrets to uncover.
Lastly, the game has also taken a conservation approach from Genshin Impact’s story-filled quests and exploration, as we only took 12 hours to complete the main story and side quests and collect every treasure. Each island is marked with a number of remaining chests, turning the game into a delightful scavenger hunt as you strive to uncover every last one.
Combat: A Mix of Swordplay, Firepower, and Magic
Combat in Cat Quest 3 is a satisfying blend of melee and ranged attacks, with players switching between sword slashes and gunfire to take down enemies. For example, the fluidity of switching between these offensive options adds depth to the combat, making each encounter feel dynamic.
However, it’s not just about brute force; magic also plays a crucial role in tackling foes. With spells and limited mana to manage, you must strategically balance your magical and physical attacks to survive the challenges ahead. The action is also fast-paced and satisfying, leaving a hunger for more as you explore the dungeons for any unfortunate victim in your eyesight.
If land battles are not enough for you, Cat Quest 3 offers sea battles. For context, after you’ve scoured an island, you can summon your vessel and set sail to new lands, engaging in sea battles with other pirate ships. Naval combat is a refreshing change of pace from dungeon searching, requiring strategic manoeuvring to outsmart opponents. While the ships don’t turn on a dime, the encounters are short enough to remain engaging without becoming tedious.
Treasure, Gear, and Customisation
Success in combat heavily relies on how you equip your character. Like any good RPG, Cat Quest 3 allows for gear customisation, with different clothing sets affecting your stats and appearance. Some gear boosts health, others enhance mana recovery, and some provide elemental resistances. Gold and experience orbs also help you level up and unlock new abilities, while money helps upgrade your gear.
However, while the gear system offers plenty of options, it does have its drawbacks. The inability to sell off unwanted items can clutter your inventory, making it cumbersome to sift through gear. Despite these minor grievances, the customisation options add depth to the combat experience, allowing for a playstyle that suits your preferences.
Minor Nitpit on Cat Quest 3

Besides the inventory system, we found that the character’s companion, Captain Cappey, is a bit of a letdown as he delivers lines filled with stereotypical pirate jargon. While he has his charm, Cappey follows one common theme in modern games, which is he’s the voice of your otherwise silent protagonist.
Final Verdict: Cat Quest 3 Is An 8.5/10

Despite these minor issues, Cat Quest 3 is a delightful and robust RPG journey full of whimsy, exciting combat, and enjoyable character interactions.
With everything considered, it is a game that knows how to maintain its charm, moving on from any combat scenario or story beat before it becomes stale. Whether you’re a fan of the series or a newcomer, Cat Quest 3 is a must-have for your Switch library. It’s an adventure that will leave you grinning from ear to ear as you explore every nook and cranny of its vibrant world.
