Gearbox Software kicked off Gamescom Opening Night Live with a major surprise: the official reveal of Borderlands 4. After years of anticipation, the next instalment in the beloved looter-shooter franchise has finally arrived.
Considering the commercial success of previous Borderlands games, the arrival of Borderlands 4 was more of a “when” than an “if.” However, with the seven-year gap between Borderlands 2 and 3, fans were never quite sure when to expect the next chapter.
Fortunately, Borderlands fans did not have to wait long as the developers unveiled a dramatic CG trailer that left them buzzing.

The trailer opened with a burning phoenix in the sky, followed by the iconic setting of Pandora crashing through a mysterious field. As the chaos unfolded, a psycho bandit mask hurtled toward the surface of an unknown planet, only to be caught by a robotic arm.
This scene then set the stage for the reveal of the Borderlands 4 logo, along with the game’s confirmed platforms: PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series X. Lastly, the trailer reveal a 2025 release window, marking the first next-gen instalment in the Borderlands series.
In the words of Gearbox founder and president Randy Pitchford: “The team and I at Gearbox have a lot we’ve wanted to do with “Borderlands” since we first introduced the looter shooter genre to the world with our original game. All of us at Gearbox have massive ambitions for “Borderlands 4″. We are putting everything we have into making everything we love about Borderlands better than ever while taking the game to new levels in exciting new directions.”
2K core games senior vice president and general manager Catharina Lavers Mallet also shared his thoughts: “We’re thrilled to be able to share with our fans that 2025 will mark a massive year for 2K and Gearbox Entertainment. The Borderlands series is one of 2K’s most successful franchises ever and loved by millions globally. We’re excited that our already close partnership and collaboration with the Gearbox team has grown even deeper, and we look forward to delivering best-in-class experiences for longtime fans and new players alike.”
Everything We Know So Far About Borderlands 4

While there is scarce information about Borderlands 4, we can at least confirm a new planet, a massive departure from the series’ tradition of focusing on the Planet Pandora. Although there is no official name drop, players can expect fresh environments, challenges, and lore to explore, with potential new gameplay mechanics, enemy types, and storylines.
Another thing we can confirm from the trailer is that fans can expect the same chaotic, action-packed experience that has defined the series, with the thrill of discovering new weapons and gear at the core of the gameplay. Like its predecessors, Borderlands 4 will continue the franchise’s signature looter-shooter gameplay, as players will again take on the role of a Vault Hunter, battling hordes of enemies and collecting massive amounts of loot.
Lastly, as Borderlands 4 is a next-gen title, fans can expect significant graphical and technical improvements. From more detailed environments to smoother animations, the game will likely take full advantage of the power offered by the latest gaming hardware.
Parting Thoughts

The announcement of Borderlands 4 comes at a crucial time for the franchise. For context, the Borderlands movie, which many expected to expand the series’ popularity, unfortunately, bombed at the box office and received harsh criticism from fans and critics.
The movie’s failure has been a sore spot for the community, but the reveal of Borderlands 4 is a promising distraction, shifting focus back to the games where the series truly shines. As we move closer to the 2025 release, fans can look forward to more updates and reveals that will shed light on what’s to come in this explosive next chapter of the Borderlands saga.
