Despite the recent controversy over Dr DisRespect and his departure from Midnight Society, the studio he co-founded with Robert Bowling confirmed that Deadrop will release according to their plan in the fourth quarter of 2024.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Bowling confirmed that their plan to launch Deadrop at the end of 2024 is ongoing, and the game is unaffected by the controversies of Dr DisRespect. The interview also shed light on Dr DisRespect, aka Guy Beahm’s role as “an influencer to bring eyeballs and community to Deadrop.” He added: Having some initial marketing, in the beginning, we wouldn’t have otherwise definitely helped.”
Besides clearing up their Deadrop project, Bowling mentioned that Midnight Society comprises 55 developers and has raised $24 million to finance Deadrop.

Everything You Need to Know About Deadrop
Game Concept

Firstly, Midnight Society describes Deadrop as a “vertical extraction shooter,” a genre that combines elements of battle royale and extraction-based gameplay with a unique verticality in map design. For example, the game features vertical environments, which require players to navigate and engage in combat across multiple levels and floors.
Unlike typical shooters featuring more horizontal layouts, the game is similar to “Escape from Tarkov,” where players may need to collect resources or complete objectives before extracting from the area, adding tension and strategic decision-making to the gameplay.
Furthermore, the free-to-play game emphasises competitive multiplayer gameplay, with players needing to cooperate or compete to achieve specific goals and extract from the environment.
NFT Development
While the game has sparked interest in many, the controversy surrounding its development may exceed it. For context, Midnight Society has highlighted a development approach that involves the gaming community closely, allowing players to engage with the development process of Deadrop and provide feedback.
However, it includes integrating blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) into its ecosystem. For example, the game will seemingly include digital collectables and potentially other in-game assets such as NFTs Founder’s Pass, which players can own and trade. It is a polarising topic within the gaming community as the NFT market is highly speculative, and prices can be volatile.
Moreover, it can lead to concerns about gambling-like behaviour, where players might spend significant money on digital assets with uncertain future value to sell or trade the NFT in the game for real money.
Lastly, NFTs in gaming also raise questions about consumer protection, intellectual property rights, and regulatory compliance, as they can vary widely by jurisdiction.
Gameplay and Features

As mentioned above, the combat system in Deadrop features vertical environments, meaning you will need to climb, clamber, zipline, and slide your way through a maze of combat where everyone wants what you have, and no one is letting you out alive.
The longer you stay alive, the better loot you will get, as the Refiner State provides high-value items, from discarded weapons and attachments to customise your weapons to highly sought-after black market items. To achieve victory in the game, players must find the extraction point before it’s taken by a competing raider or fight to the death to get out alive as the last remaining Claw.
Lastly, there seems to be a racing mechanic where you can race against opponents as you drive toward the Refiner State. As for whether the feature is similar to Neverness to Everness’s teases, we will await the game’s official release.
Closing Statement
With everything said and done, Deadrop represents an ambitious project from Midnight Society, seeking to innovate within the shooter genre by introducing unique gameplay mechanics and community-driven development processes.
Its blend of vertical map design, extraction-based gameplay, and integration of new technologies like NFTs makes it a notable entry in the landscape of upcoming games.
