Diablo 4 Prime Evils: Who Are They?

Have you ever wondered where Diablo 4 gets its name from and if it has some sort of connection to the game itself? Well, Diablo is actually the name of one of the three Prime Evils set in the game. These three Diablo 4 Prime Evils make up a big part of the game’s main storyline by constantly trying to take over the High Heavens and the human world. Let’s take a look at who the Diablo 4 Prime Evils are and what exactly they try to do.

Diablo 4 Prime Evils

If you’ve played Diablo 4, you’ll know that there are three Diablo 4 Prime Evils present in the game. These include Mephisto — The Lord of Hatred, Baal — The Lord of Destruction, and Diablo himself — The Lord of Terror. The entire plot line takes place with these three prime Evils fighting against the High Heavens and trying to invade the Sanctuary, a world inhabited by humans in the game.

The Diablo 4 Prime Evils can also be seen as bosses you have to defeat in order to progress throughout the game. The interesting part is that they can’t be killed indefinitely, you can only banish them back to their realm. That is partly why they keep making reappearances throughout much of the game.

Now, let’s take a look at all of Diablo 4 Prime Evils individually to see exactly what they have in store for players.

Mephisto —The Lord of Hatred

Mephisto is the first Diablo 4 Prime Evil players will encounter in the Diablo series. He’s found in Act III of Diablo 2, where he enters the Sanctuary, shortly after which he faces Soulstone imprisonment. He was then only referenced in the later games of the series, where Diablo had absorbed his essence. After players defeat Diablo in Diablo 3, however, Mephisto is once again released to cause chaos and havoc.

Many players consider Mephisto the weakest Diablo 4 Prime Evil, and that’s probably due to his minimal screen time in the game. This is drastically changed in Diablo 4, where the main antagonist is Mephisto’s daughter, Lilith, as well as his reappearance in Diablo 4’s first official expansion pack, Vessel of Hatred.

The expansion will see his return to the game and expand on his role in bringing destruction over from the Burning Hells into the Sanctuary. While he might not be the strongest Prime Evil, he is seen as the most devious one. Agreeing with Diablo’s plan only to plot his own course through his brethren is what makes him so cunning. He will often appear to humans in the form of an injured wolf for them to commit some sort of act of hatred.

Baal – The Lord of Destruction

Baal is the second prime Evil that players will encounter in Act V of Diablo 2. His story mostly revolves around him being imprisoned initially by a powerful sorcerer, Tal Rasha, whom he drives mad from the inside in order to escape. After his escape, Baal sees that his brothers have already been defeated and trapped inside Soulstones, making him the Prime Evil for Diablo 2’s Act V.

During his conquest of the Worldstone, Baal slays some angelic warriors while pretending to be one of their own. Afterwards, though, he is defeated by the same heroes who defeated Diablo before, closing off his story for the future.

In Diablo 3, Baal suffers much the same fate as Mephisto. He is trapped within a Soulstone and is absorbed by his brother, Diablo — The Lord of Terror, to launch an attack on the High Heavens. Again, he is also released with Mephisto when Diablo is defeated. What happens next to Baal has not been mentioned yet.

Diablo — The Lord of Terror

The final Diablo 4 Prime Evil is Diablo — The Lord of Terror. As many of you might have guessed, Diablo is the strongest prime Evil among the three. His main goal has always been conquering both the High Heavens and the Sanctuary to bring them under his control. As you progress through the Diablo series, you’ll see him trying to use his brothers’ powers in order to gain control of the other worlds, but he has continuously failed.

In Diablo 1, Diablo is trapped beneath Tristram’s Cathedral, after which he manages to possess a young prince named Albrecht. While he spread some chaos in the Sanctuary, it was soon cut short when he was found out by Albrecht’s brother, Aidan, who defeated the Lord of Terror and trapped him within a Soulstone. In the later scenes, Aidan tries to contain Diablo within himself but fails and is consumed by the demonic lord.

The strongest Diablo 4 Prime Evil frees the other two demonic lords and releases them, as well as some Lesser Evils, to enact his plan of taking over the other worlds. However, he is once again sought out and defeated by heroes. Finally, in Diablo 3, Diablo rises once again and absorbs the powers of both his brothers. While he gets further in his quest than before, he is defeated for a third time by Nephalem, a human with the powers of both angels and demons. Now, all three of the Diablo 4 Prime Evils are sent back to the Burning Hells, awaiting return.

The Diablo 4 Prime Evils are definitely no laughing matter when it comes to the Diablo universe. With their never-ending thirst for chaos and destruction, they will keep resurrecting to try and gain control of the Sanctuary and the High Heavens. All we can try to do is keep defeating them and sending them back to the Burning Hells, simply awaiting their next arrival.
