Roadhog has been one of the most controversial heroes in Overwatch 2, but that could be quickly changing. The hero that was once at the top of the meta, with his ability to one-shot squishies with his hook combo, now sits at the bottom of the pile with a sub-par win rate and constant underperformance. Blizzard announced they’d be addressing this issue with a Roadhog rework, but it might take a bit longer to fix him completely.
Roadhog Rework Delayed till End of Season 7
With the start of season 7 on October 10th, fans were highly anticipating two major changes to the game’s roster: The reworks of Sombra and Roadhog. While we’ll talk briefly about the Sombra rework as well, the Roadhog rework was a much-needed change to fix the hero’s play and win rate. However, players should remember that Blizzard announced the Roadhog rework would not be coming as part of the mid-season update since they still need to make some changes.
As we mentioned before, Roadhog went from a monster of a hero on his release to an extremely niche pick no one wanted to play after his nerf. This decreases the hero pool and makes the game less entertaining with limited picks, so Blizzard set out to issue a Roadhog rework. The rework focuses mainly on making his playstyle more team-centred rather than a one-hero carry, adjusting two of his abilities, and adding an entirely new ability to his kit.
Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller stated in his Director’s Take blog post that they are targeting his shotgun primary fire and Take a Breather healing ability to make them more balanced and increase his potential as a tank hero. The new ability that was hinted at with the Roadhog rework hasn’t been elaborated on by Blizzard, but we’re sure it will help balance out his usefulness in-game.

Other Overwatch 2 Scheduled Mid-Season Update Changes
The Roadhog rework isn’t the only change players should expect to see in the mid-season update. Another big rework coming to Overwatch 2 is Sombra’s rework. This has been a highly requested rework by players for a couple of seasons now, and Blizzard is finally getting around to issuing it.
Sombra Rework in Overwatch 2
The DPS hacker Sombra has an ability which grants her indefinite invisibility, making her near-impossible to kill. A hero being able to just go invisible and kill enemy heroes just doesn’t seem fair. If you add her skill to teleport away when she’s low health, she almost becomes an instant-dodge hero, ruining the gaming experience for many players.
To combat this, Blizzard will be tweaking her Translocator ability to trigger immediately after she’s thrown to limit the manipulation of this ability. However, they have still left her indefinite invisibility up, which we’ll have to see how it plays out.
Blizzard has also thrown in a new Virus projectile for Sombra, which does damage over time and can be combined with her Hack ability for more damage. This change aims to give her more persistent damage over just having to burst down enemies. Looking at these changes, it seems like Sombra, like the Roadhog rework, will always be getting a buff this season.

New Game Modes, New Map, and a Cross-Over PvE Event

The final updates we have for season 7 in Overwatch 2 are the introduction of a new map called Samoa as well as the return of the Halloween Terror game modes. These game modes gained a lot of popularity last year, so Overwatch 2 has decided to give them another go this year.
All of this has been coupled with a cross-over event called Trials of Sanctuary. This PvE event is in collaboration with Diablo 4 and stars Moira as Lilith and Pharah as Inarius.
These fun new changes, coupled with the Sombra and Roadhog rework, are bound to make this an exciting season indeed.
Conclusion
There are tons of new changes coming to Overwatch 2 in season 7. The much-anticipated reworks will also be dropping to make both Sombra and Roadhog viable heroes in the meta again. However, you’ll still need to wait a bit before being able to use the new Roadhog skill since the Roadhog rework has been delayed and will arrive before the end of season 7.
