Rise of the Ronin recently received its rating from ESRB, and many fans will be glad to know this. The M stands for mature and is usually given when a game features content that is suitable for individuals over the age of 17. Now, this isn’t new for Team Ninja games since their previous titles, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Nioh 2, both had mature ratings as well. Let’s delve into the question of whether or not Rise of the Ronin will be Team Ninja’s most violent game yet.
What Is Team Ninja’s Most Violent Game Yet?

As the release date approaches closer and closer, Team Ninja steadily releases new information regarding Rise of the Ronin. The most recent piece of information, the ESRB rating, has people wondering whether the game will be more violent as compared to their previous games i.e. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Nioh 2. Now, while we can’t exactly say for sure, given the limited gameplay footage of Rise of the Ronin, there are some aspects of the game which heavily favour this idea.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Nioh 2 were both rated mature by the ESRB, but there are several reasons we believe Rise of the Ronin will be Team Ninja’s most violent game yet. The first is that you have the ability to kill civilians. This feature is present primarily because, unlike previous titles, Rise of the Ronin is actually set in an open-world setting.
The other part which gives weight to the idea of Rise of the Ronin being Team Ninja’s most violent game yet is that, according to the developers, the game is set in the Bakumatsu period, a period characterised by violence and injustice throughout the land of Japan. They’ve tried to portray it as realistically as possible, meaning the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the arrival of the American ‘Black Ships’ will definitely play a role in the story’s development. The definite answer to Team Ninja’s most violent game yet will be revealed once the game drops in March 2024.

Open-World Setting Leading To Increased Violence
We kind of skimmed over all the reasons why Rise of the Ronin is ahead in the running to be Team Ninja’s most violent game yet, but now it’s time to talk about them in detail.

The first reason was that players could freely kill NPC civilians without it affecting any part of the story. While this doesn’t mean the game will definitely be more violent, it does open up the possibility of players taking full advantage of this feature and making the villages a bloodbath. It would mean killing off children, the elderly, animals, and anything you set your sights on. Since the weapons provided are mostly melee hack-and-slash weapons, deaths will definitely be bloody.
Swords and katanas aren’t the only ways to get rid of someone since Rise of the Ronin also has flamethrowers and ranged weapons like guns (Thanks to the arrival of American weapons in that era). With this huge array of weapons at your disposal, there are obviously tons of death animations as well to incorporate every weapon usage properly. We aren’t trying to push you guys in a direction, but if this is something you want to do, go ahead and don’t hold back.

The second reason we really think this title could be more gruesome than the previous titles is because of the setting. As we mentioned before, Rise of the Ronin is set at a time when the Tokugawa Shogunate’s rule was coming to an end. There was widespread brutality, and people were killed in savage ways.
With the game being open-world, you’re bound to cross paths with brutish NPCs killing innocent civilians without remorse or maybe members of the Tokugawa Shogunate being executed by the arriving American fleets. Regardless of what’s happening, there’s bound to be bloodshed spread wherever you go.
ESRB’s Review on Rise of the Ronin’s M-Rating

We can’t close off the article without mentioning the main reason we think Rise of the Ronin will be Team Ninja’s most violent game yet. ESRB recently gave the title an M-rating, and in their review, they mentioned how the game incorporated very brutal and gruesome elements that led to this rating. With the use of strong language, dismemberments, and lots of killing, there was no other rating appropriate for this title. This is why we believe it could very well be Team Ninja’s most violent game yet.

The Bottom Line
No one can say for sure whether Rise of the Ronin is going to be Team Ninja’s most violent game, but from what we’ve gathered, it’s safe to say it won’t disappoint in this department. However, one thing is for sure. Fans can expect a truly unfiltered experience when they jump into Rise of the Ronin, and they will be true to do whatever they want.
